Acclaimed Hollywood actor John Cusack has opened up about why he has largely stepped away from mainstream films, saying that creative freedom became more important to him than working within the traditional studio system.
Speaking during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where he introduced his new graphic novel Momo, Cusack explained that major film productions often involve too many creative compromises. He said he wanted to tell stories without constant interference from studios, producers, or executives.

The Say Anything… and High Fidelity star described graphic novels as one of the closest storytelling formats to cinema, allowing creators to fully control the narrative and visual style. Cusack also praised his collaboration with artist Ignacio Noé, noting that Momo was created without outside editorial changes.
Despite his reduced presence in Hollywood, Cusack clarified that he has not retired from acting. He added that he would be open to returning to the screen, especially if Momo is adapted into a film.
